February 2010

MOTHER JONES:
My friends, it is solidarity of labor we want.
We do not want to find fault with each other,
but to solidify our forces and say to each
other: "We must be together; our masters
are joined together and we must do the same
thing."
Dear Brothers and Sisters, Well on February
28th our (none) contract will be one year old.
As you all know the ratification vote failed by
a large majority, and the Brotherhood has
spoken. I think I understand why some of us
voted yes, and do not hold any bad feelings
toward anyone of them. Just remember that
the only place to get the right information on
negotiations or any other information to do
with the union is at a meeting. We are the
only people that talk to anyone in the
company that can make an offer or a decision
that can impact the Union.

So what happens now? Mike Fluharty has
expressed a desire to meet with the
negotiation team one more time, he expressed
to me that he did not have much room to
move, but we will meet and see what they
have in mind. The results will be made public
at the regular meeting. If the body wants to
vote on any new proposal we will do that. If
they decide not to we will file with the NLRB
for arbitration. I feel we are prepared for any
circumstance.

On a new issue we did win our last arbitration
on a wrongful discharge. That made my day.
It’s victories like that, that make the job
worth doing. I love to see the little guy win
over big business, with their big mouthy
lawyers, and sneaky tactics.

Willie and I have had the pleasure to sign up
some new members and many will be at the
next meeting to make the pledge and get
welcomed into the fold. Not all of the laborers
joined but hopefully they will see what we are
all about and come around eventually. The
last thing I will address here is the frequency
of OSHA at the plant site. I think if the
company is serious about safety there
wouldn't’t be any reason for the membership
to be forced to make reports. If you have a
need to contact this agency, you can remain
anonymous (not always the case in piss tests)
and do it by phone. I would report the
discrepancy to management first; if they do
not act on it immediately call OSHA.

Remember to do your safety walk arounds
before you drive, read the JSA’s, Operating
orders, and wear your PPE. And go home and
be safe there too.

There is nothing so useless as doing efficiently
that which should not be done at all.
